The Lantern is a default item in Sea of Thieves. It is used to brighten up the surrounding area when held; being most efficient at night or in dark caves. If one holds the left trigger (Xbox One; RMB on PC), they will hold the lantern up higher, lighting up areas further away. Players should note that if they sprint while holding the lantern, it will be put away until the player ceases sprinting.

Trivia

  • There are fixed lanterns aboard Ships that can be manually lit/blown out.
  • Players can blow out/re-light their candle in the lantern by pressing the right trigger (Xbox One; LMB on PC).
  • Players have been known to use lanterns (both fixed and hand-held) as communication with other ships by continuously turning them on and off. The intention of the flickering can be both a sign of peace, or a false-signal to lure other players into a false sense of security for an ambush.
